Very Impressive Porcelain Group, "Diana the Hunteress and her Nymphs" circa 1860

About the Item

Diana the Hunteress and her Nymphs Important sculptural group in white enamelled porcelain representing the Goddess Diana the Hunteress and her Nymphs, with her pack of dogs Resting on an ormolu gilded and chiselled terrace. Marked with N crowned underneath Manufacture de Niderviller Circa 1860 According to the paintings by Pierre-Paul Rubens and Jan I Brueghel, « Diane and her Nymphs preparing for the Hunt» and the pendant, «Diana’s resting » , both kept at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris (Hunting and Nature Museum) Dimensions Group H 59 x L 58 x P 33 cm Total Height 70 cm Ormolu base L 62 x P 45 cm Created in 1735, the pottery of Niderviller owes its fame to its statuettes. Under the direction of J-L Beyerlé, it is oriented towards this type of products. These are true masterpieces, largely inspired by sculpture, which then come out of the facto-ries of Niderviller. The success is such that they receive many awards, as well as various prizes. They even end up appearing in a “Book of forms” at the beginning of the 19th century. Although the porcelain of Niderviller did not have the expected success, its earthenware, on the other hand, has passed through the ages. Whether for decoration or table service, the presentation of this French pottery is now international

‘Diana the Huntress’. A Near Lifesize Statuary Marble Group
By Alfred Boucher
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
Alfred Boucher (French, 1850-1934), ‘Diana the Huntress’, A Near Lifesize Statuary Marble Group. Modelled nude with head turned looking to her left, striding forward holding the greyhound by its collar with her right hand and a giltwood bow in her left hand. On an integral carved base with foliage support. Signed 'A. BOUCHER' Boucher’s choice of pose is deliberately indebted to the celebrated mid-16th century painting of Diana the Huntress by an anonymous artist of the School of Fontainebleau. The painting is a mythical representation of Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of King Henry II, in the guise of the goddess Diana, who is shown nude, walking forward beside a greyhound, looking over her left shoulder and holding a bow. Another clear antecedent for Boucher’s ‘Diane the Huntress...
