About the Item

An interesting collection of fifteen natural, prehistoric English ammonite fossil specimens of varying shapes and sizes – ranging from 9.5 cm (3.74 in) wide to 2.5cm wide (0.98 in). Ex. private collection of David Thomas Turner (1945-2023). Excellent collector’s pieces, each specimen in this group showcases the distinctive coil of the ammonite, some with ridge ornamentation, which was once the original shell; now fossilised. Well-preserved for millions of years, these specimen ammonites offer just a small glimpse into the ancient history of the natural world! Showcasing a range of textures, their light, Cotswold stone-like colour ties the group together, making a stunning set for the modern collector. Provenance This group is just one of various fossil collections we have for sale previously part of a wider collection collated by David Thomas Turner. Born in East Yorkshire, Turner pursued a career in horticulture and had a keen interest in geology and natural world. On a visit to Speeton, East Yorkshire in 1973, Turner unearthed his passion for collecting fossils, discovering the first few pieces of his outstanding collection of prehistoric specimens. He later became Fields Visits Secretary for the Essex Rock and Mineral Society, organising trips to geological sites throughout the UK and travelling abroad to explore further discoveries. Additional Information Largest: 6.5cm (2.56in) x 9.5 (3.74 in) x 6 cm (2.36 in) Smallest: 2.5cm wide (0.98 in) Weight for the set.
