Fossilised Colla Wood Cross-Section

About the Item

Fossilised colla wood cross-section Miocene, circa 5-23 Million y/o This fossilised white pine wood section displays a beautiful surface, with vibrant hues of browns, blues and greens creating a dazzling effect. This is the result of a fossilisation process known as permineralization, whereby organic wood tissue becomes permeated over time by minerals present in the ground or water. Among the minerals found in the present section are deep blue azurite, green malachite and light blue chrysocolla, which has lent its name to this type of fossilised wood. Colla wood was first discovered by gold prospectors in 2012 near the town of Zile, in the Black Sea region of Turkey. As collecting from this location virtually stopped after 2013, Colla wood specimens have become rare occurrences on the market. Their scarcity, as well as their incredible aesthetic appeal, make them highly desirable examples of Nature's most beautiful fossilisation process.
