Golden Amber-Colored Calcite Crystal Mineral Specimen – Cumberland Mine, USA

About the Item

Calcites are plentiful and can be found in numerous places on Earth, but their diversity of aesthetics and quality are just as varied. In fact, fine calcites are quite distinctive, and seasoned collectors can often recognize the exact mines, and even sometimes the individual pocket from which fine caliber calcites have been recovered. The Cumberland Mine of Tennessee is one such locality, known for twinned, scalenohedral calcite crystals with golden to deep amber hues. This is a sizable example with great morphology and a lot of visual impact. It features a large, horizontally positioned, twinned calcite crystal that takes center stage as its focal point. On one end, the crystal has a single, sharp point, on the other, the crystal has multiple smaller points. It is accented by a smaller crystal with the same form. The crystals resemble illustrated depictions of fire, as though the crystals were flames shooting through space with their trailing tails following behind. The crystals also have sharp form, sleek luster, and the golden-amber color for which Elmwood is loved. A contrasting, black sphalerite matrix punctuates the color and form of the calcites, heightening their vibrant hues and sharp edges. This specimen’s combination of arresting color, unusual formation, and great overall size, make it a natural showpiece that immediately catches the eye. Reference: #08092.

Although the deposit has been mined since 1914 for ore, it has only recently been a source of collectible mineral specimens. Despite being among the newer finds in the mineral collecting world, YGX fluorites have distinguished themselves with their enchanting water-color blues, lilacs, and purples and propensity for good form. This is a sculptural example made up of several cubic fluorite crystals...
