Golden Rutilated Quartz Sphere Mineral Specimen, Minas Gerais, Brazil

About the Item

Rutilated Quartz is a unique gemstone renowned for its captivating beauty and intriguing composition. It comprises two different mineral species, rutile and quartz. Rutile is a titanium dioxide that can form in various colors, including copper or golden metallic tones. It can sometimes create prismatic crystals but is most famous for its acicular (needlelike) form. For this reason, golden acicular rutile is sometimes called, "Venus' hair stone." After the rutile, a second generation of quartz formed, encapsulating it in a vitreous body making it prime for cutting and polishing by skilled lapidary artists. This is a spectacular example that has long, ultra-fine acicular crystals of rutile. The hair-like crystals have a golden shine and extend from one end of the sphere to the other, which is an uncommon trait for rutilated specimens, particularly of this large size. The quartz has a subtle, warm, smoky hue thanks to trace amounts of aluminum in its elemental makeup. The piece has been cut and polished into a sphere by a skilled lapidary artist. When lit from below and rotated, this piece has a magical quality to it that resembles stars shooting across the sky. Its cosmic and ethereal aesthetics inspire many to refer to it as a "Palantir." Comes with a black rotating base with an internal light (USA-compatible plug). Item reference: #16833.
