About the Item

A large natural plate type carboniferous fossilised fern. Showing ferns in relief, this fossil would certainly make a stunning new display or decorative piece for any home or collectors cabinet. This fossil fern is from the collection of Chris Cornell, a specialist in natural history and taxidermy, who had work displayed at the Museum of Natural History in London. Carboniferous fossil ferns Fossilised ferns date from the Carboniferous, between 360 and 299 million years ago. They are found in several places around the world, but some of the best specimens come from Pennsylvania, USA. Seed Ferns (Peridospermatophyta) are some of the most common plants in the Carboniferous coal forests. They are often preserved as intricate carbon films and are prized by fossil plant collectors. The name comes from the fact they had fern like foliage, but reproduced with seeds. This fossil was formed millions of years ago and is now available to be displayed in a home today.
