Late 19th-early 20th Bailer shell pectoral, Highlands, possibly Mendi People, Papua New Guinea
These large shell pectorals were worn ceremonially by men and women in Papua New Guinea - please see photo. This particular example of the melo amphora shell is 10 inches high and 7.5 inches wide, or 13 inches high as mounted on the custom metal base. There is a braided fiber rope for hanging on the neck and the pink powder has long ago washed away.
