About the Item

Ammonites are an extinct group of marine cephalopods, resembling the modern nautilus. These fascinating creatures had a soft body with tentacles that emerged from a hollow, chambered shell, which they used similarly to a submarine's ballast tanks for buoyancy control. Ammonites are often identified by the intricate ornamentation on their shells and the complex structures of the walls dividing the shell's chambers. This custom-mounted pair of Speetoniceras split pair ammonites from Russia has been meticulously cut in half to showcase their internal features. During the fossilization process, some of the original organic material was replaced with pyrite, resulting in a strikingly beautiful specimen. This exceptional piece is perfect for any serious fossil collector's cabinet of curiosities, adding a touch of natural history and unique charm to their collection. Measures: 14" x 4" x 13.25"
