A Near-Life Size Pair of Japanese Ivory Okimono Doves
About the Item
The unique art of okimono originates in Meiji Period, Japan. Following the abolition of shogunate isolationism in 1853, Japanese culture embraced western fashions, causing a rapid decline in the production of miniature netsuke sculptures made to adorn the once ubiquitous kosode and kimono robes. Netsuke sculptors began to apply their skills to larger works of art called okimono that were displayed in the home as decorative objects of beauty. The most accomplished okimono; zoomorphic models made of fine materials and carved with realistic detail, were eagerly acquired by western connoisseurs. Despite the quality of the work, surprisingly little is known about the skilled okimono sculptors of the period. However other signed pieces by this sculptor Koho are known.
