Original Polychrome Spelter Bust of a Woman Signed E. Villanis, circa 1890

About

French late 19th century polychrome, spelter figure of a Bohemian woman on a fabulous hieroglyphic detailed verde antico integral column base. The Orientalist French metal bust is entitled “shackled” and was made by Villanis from a full figure executed by him a short while before. This realistically rendered embodiment appears as if it’s a life cast with delicate features, caramel colored skin tone and a seductive visage. She dons a Moroccan red headdress with movable doré patinated earrings, and is beautifully viewed from all angles. Villanis, a prolific sculptor, cherished his models and often used the same "femme" in his various works. 1890 Signed: E. Villanis Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914). References: illustrated in H.
