"Pirate with Cutlass, " Early Sculpture by Walter Inglis Anderson for Shearwater

About the Item

Although Walter Anderson is best known for his superb series of watercolor paintings depicting the birds and animals of the Gulf Coast, influenced by the stylization of the Art Deco period, he also collaborated with his brothers in creating ceramic pieces for the Shearwater Pottery in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He created molds for twenty pirate figures, forty seven African American figures, several football players, and fairy tale figures. This is an early example of his work, the glazes more creatively applied than later pieces -- note how the glaze for the pirate's beard is dripping down the figure's chest.
