Japanese Antique Porcelain Bottle 'Kayoi tokkuri/ Binbo tokkuri' 1900s Meiji era

About the Item

This is a sake bottle called 'Kayoi tokkuri' or 'Binbo tokkuri'. It is made with a porcelain and it is written Manazuru-machi and Fukubi. Manazuru-machi is the city name and it is located in Ohita prefecture. This bottle was made in Japan around 1900s in Meiji era. It is thought to have been distributed from the late Edo period to the early Showa period and was used by the general public for retail use by liquor stores. Sake shops rented out Tokkuri (sake cups) and sold them to customers by filling them with the amount of sake they wanted. On the sake bottle, the name of the liquor store, the brand name, and, in the Showa period, the phone number of the store were also written. Customers would take the sake bottle with them when they went shopping, and it was a great way to advertise the store along the way. (By Reiwa Antique)
