Two Ceramic Vases, Gitte & Finn Hauptmann, Biot 1952

About the Item

Two gourd vases with generous and vivid glaze made by four hands by danish Artist Gitte Hauptmann and her brother Finn. Condition is excellent. Measurements (cm) : 19.5 h x 14.5 diam. & 12.6 h x 18.4 diam. Gitte Hauptmann is a self-taught painter and visual artist born in 1934. She is the daughter of the painter Sven Hauptmann. At the very beginning of the 50s during a long stay in Aix en Provence with his father and brother Svenn, and when she was not yet 20 years old, she began her artistic journey with ceramics and met Jean Megard who would be her companion for a while. The two young people frequented the workshops of Carlos Fernandez and Jean and Jo Amado's where this piece, both spontaneous and remarkably accomplished, was most certainly made. A year later she moved with Jean Megard in their studio in Biot until the summer 1954, marked by the exhibition of the Espace group under the aegis of André Bloc and with the collaboration of many visionary artists of that time, as Fernand Léger, Jean Arp, Viktor Vasarely or Sonia Delaunay to name but a few. These encounters had a lasting influence on Gitte's artistic expression.
