Blue and White Large Delft Five Piece Garniture Hand Painted Early-18th Century

About the Item

This magnificent blue and white Dutch Delft garniture was hand-painted at De Drie Vergulde Astonnekens (The Three Golden Ash Barrels) three hundred years ago. This group consists of a single covered jar, a pair of gourd-shaped vases, and a pair of trumpet-shaped vases. The center jar is 23"(57.5cm) tall. The large proportions and complementary shapes make a sculptural presence and dramatic statement. An all-over cobalt blue design surrounds each piece. We see long-tailed birds, flowers, and foliage exquisitely painted on a white ground. This type of design with small flowers is called millefleurs (a thousand flowers). The designs on the base of each vase consist of lambrequins, shell shapes, and scrolling vines. The underside of the pieces have two sets of underglaze blue marks for De Drie Vergulde Astonnekens. Dimensions: the gourd-shaped vases measure 19.5" tall x 8.75" at the widest point, the jar measures 23" tall x 11.5" at the widest point, and the trumpet-shaped vases measure 16" tall x 6.5" at the widest point. Condition: Excellent small edge chips invisibly restored Price: $24,600 THE UNDERGLAZE BLUE MARKS: The marks tell us a lot about where and when this garniture was made. The covered jar and gourd-shaped vases all have the mark of Pieter Gerrtsz Kam. This mark was in use at De Drie Vergulde Astonnekens from 1705-1716. The pair of trumpet-shaped vases have the mark of Zacharias Dextra. This mark was in use at De Drie Vergulde Astonnekens between 1721 to 1757. The two marks indicate that the garniture was begun by 1716 and was finished sometime soon after 1721. From this, we can date the complete set to the decade beginning in 1721.
