Early Mid-Century Renaissance style ceramic wine jug. Marked Ciccoli, Pesaro.

About the Item

Elegant Italian ceramic wine jug from the first half of the twentieth century, made and entirely decorated by hand. On the jug is the mark of the artistic ceramics manufactory "Ciccoli," active between the early 1920s and the 1950s in Pesaro, central Italy. The subject of the jar's decoration, which is highly original overall, is freely inspired by the Renaissance art style and features a personage in the center with a musical instrument at his side, drinking, glass in hand, above. Behind the character, on the cartouche is written in rhyme: "Viva lo vin, che ti fà allegro il core; Bando a' sospiri e pianti, Viva l'Amore." "Long live wine, which gladdens your heart; No more sighs and tears, Long live Love". The "Ciccoli Ceramiche" factory, with numerous employees and prominent collaborators, specializing in artistic copies of Renaissance-era ceramics, was opened in 1923 in Pesaro, continuing operations until it closed in the first half of the 1950s.
