About the Item
A large Japanese covered Totai enamel on porcelain ginger jar. The ware is enamelled with polychrome floral and foliage ornaments made in the Cloisonne technique. The cover of the ware is adorned with floral, foliage and geometrical ornaments made in the same technique. Completed with a porcelain lid featuring a blue ink design representing tree branches and a traditional Geometrical motif on the borders. Unmarked. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonne on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain. It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonne ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain, as is done on the inside of the lid of this item.
