About the Item

Vintage ceramic ginger jar with lid is decorated with abstract graphic motifs in sgraffito technique; the gar is glazed in brown to grey salt glaze with striking splashes of different shades of brown on the sgraffito areas. The inner surfaces of the jar are glazed in simple beige glaze, making the gar fully functional, as well as decorative. The lid is done in the same salt glaze without sgraffito decor, but the inner surface is not glazed. The jar is signed on the bottom with artist's mark.

Pisgah Forest Ginger Jar with Lid, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1930s
By North Carolina Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Beautiful rounded ginger jar with lid features complex green craquelure glaze; the glaze is fluctuating between forest green and deep celadon green hues, is in high gloss finish, and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze. The jar is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom with one of the earlier, round marks, "N.C. Pisgah Forest West Ashville, Route 19" with the date and potter at the wheel logo (see Kovel's American Art Pottery Marks, p. 149). Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC. Lee Levy Multi Spouted Vase, American Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage ceramic bud vase features sculptural multi spouted shape and stunning textured drip glaze in earthy, organic brown palette. The gradation glaze color and abstract graphic pattern of the main decor emphasize the soft, rounded shape of the vase; the use of shades of brown, from dark espresso to mocha to off-shite cappuccino, creates rich and varied, but monochromatic palette that does not overpower the complex form and shape of the vase. The vase is signed on the bottom with LEE, that was Lee Levy customary signature; it is not dated, but the style of the piece is consistent with her Mid-Century Modern pieces created in 1960s-1970s. Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...
