About the Item

A beautifully coordinated pair of blown glass apothecary jars from Empoli, Italy, dating to the 1950s. Featuring an elegant smoky gray coloration, the pair is subtly varied in scale for a harmonious display. The taller jar measures 6 inches in diameter and 15.75 inches high; the smaller measures 5.5 inches in diameter and 14.5 inches tall. Produced in the Empoli region—just southwest of Florence—these jars reflect the post-war Italian fascination with clean forms and muted sophistication. While often compared to designs by Paolo Venini and occasionally attributed to Gio Ponti, Empoli glass developed its own distinct identity in the mid-20th century. Known for its simplicity, softness of color, and approachable elegance, Empoli glass provided a modern counterpoint to the more elaborate Murano tradition. Glassmaking in Empoli dates back to the 14th century, but it was in the 1950s and '60s that the region gained international attention. Local workshops began exporting their designs widely, contributing to the broader global enthusiasm for Italian modernism. Unlike Murano’s flamboyant techniques, Empoli glass favored refined silhouettes, blown forms, and often monochromatic tones—perfectly suited for modern interiors. These apothecary jars are timeless decorative objects, ideal for placement on a mantel, console, or as accents in a shelving vignette. Whether used as sculptural vessels or elegant storage, they embody the understated luxury of Italian glass design at its best.
