Pre-Columbian Erotic Pottery from the Chimu Culture

$2,800

About

A striking homomorphic black pot, from the Chimu Culture (8th-15th century AD) along the Northern Coast of the nowadays Peru, of a jug form as a man with an exaggerated phallus. Well molded face and expertly outlined limbs. The surface is decorated with small protrusions creating a demarcation of the negative space on the body. Chimu culture and its artistic tradition including the pottery making is a continuation of the early Moche culture (2nd- 8th century AD). This kind of phallic stoneware as well as the other erotic pottery was believed to be fertility dolls for the burial ritual, but recent theory also suggests that it may be related to agricultural devotion. The collecting and Provenance is available.
