About the Item
French vintage mid-century pharmacy jar from Vallauris, the site of an important and influential ceramics industry noted for its utilitarian kitchenware balanced with the artistry of handmade pottery, which drew Robert Picault, Picasso, and Roger Capron to make some of their most iconic designs there. This example follows the silhouette of traditional European pharmacy jars using a white slip glaze with deep green foliate decoration around the tall lid and calling attention to the text on the cylinder. Within a shield-shaped label is “VNG Arcoe” for a now unfamiliar herb, perhaps a translation of Pau d’Arco harvested in South America. Today this jar makes a charming vessel for storage in a kitchen or bathroom. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Signed by the artist with “RP” underneath.
