About the Item

This is a very old jar in Japan. This is a pottery called Tokoname ware. Tokoname is a kiln located in Aichi prefecture, Japan. (Tokoname Kiln is marked with a red circle on the map.) It is said to have originated around the 12th century. Also, in Japan, there are 6 kilns with a long history that are still going on. This is one of them. And this jar was made from the end of the 12th century to the 13th century. Many Tokoname jars from this era are dark brown or slightly grayish in color, but this one has a whitish color and a pale orange feel. This color is thought to be due to the temperature in the kiln being slightly low during firing and the oxidation firing. In the case of this firing, the surface is rough, and the texture of the clay is clearly visible, giving it a simple, wabi-sabi feel. A characteristic of this period is the inverted triangle shape, with a thin upper edge. In Japan, there is a custom of placing Buddhist scriptures in copper pipes or pottery and burying them in the ground to preserve them for future generations, and these types of vases were basically buried in the ground as well. (Also, as a reference, a similar item from the same period as this item was featured in the Japanese art book "Tokoname Ware Masterpiece Illustrated Guide," so I have attached a photo.) Around the 15th century, vases began to be made as daily necessities, and designs also changed. Such beautifully shaped vases from around the 12th century are rare and few in number. Although it is an excavated item, there are no major cracks and it is in good condition. In the 13th photo, there is a hole in the wall of the vases that has been filled in. There are also traces of a hole in the bottom where it has been filled in. If you put water in this, it will leak out from the bottom, so if you want to display flowers in it, fill another container with water and place it in that vase. We don't know when we'll be able to get something similar again. This is such a rare item. I also want as many people as possible to know the value of antiques, so I have set the price at a reasonable level. It will make a great piece of interior decor that will make your room look cool.
