19th Century Minton Majolica Neoclassical Turquoise Blue Jardinière Snakes
An excellent quality and condition, rare large size, Minton Majolica neoclassical designed snake handled jardinière circa 1876 Designed by the celebrated Architect Gottfried Semper. The body flanked by entwined serpent handles beneath a spiral ribbon, the mouth with a band of chain cantering leafy rosettes, the circular foot edged with deep pink rope. Impressed mark to the underside: 'Minton', Faint Shape no '532' and Date code for '1876'. Similar examples Shown at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition 1876. Gottfried Semper, see last image, (1803 – 15 May 1879) was a German architect, art critic, and professor of architecture, who designed and built the Opera House in Dresden between 1838 and 1841. In 1849 he took part in the May Uprising in Dresden and was put on the government's wanted list. Semper fled first to Zürich and later to London, where he produced for Minton the design for this jardinière. Later he returned to Germany after the 1862 amnesty granted to the revolutionaries. He wrote extensively about the origins of architecture, especially in his book 'The Four Elements of Architecture' from 1851, and he was one of the major figures in the polychrome architectural style of ancient Greece. Semper designed works at all scales, from major urban interventions like the re-design of the Opera House in Vienna. Semper was also an important author on colour theory and produced designs for furniture. This jardinière is the only known design that Semper produced in ceramic. This is example is one of, if not the finest example that I have ever seen, the glazes are bright and clean, the holding sharp and condition, bar a slight glaze lose to the underside of one snake, fantastic with no restoration or damages.
