Each handle topped with a Putto holding a bird and nest. The underside stamped: "Christofle - 1175263 V". Circa: Paris, 1900. Height: 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm) Width: 25 1/2 inches (64.8 cm) Depth: 14 1/4 inches (36.2 cm) Charles Christofle (d. 1863) took over his brother-in-law's bijouterie-joaillerie 'Maison Calmette' in 1831, and changed its name to 'Société Charles Christofle & Cie'. Following the invention of electro-metallurgy techniques by the English firm Elkington & Co., Christofle turned away from jewellery and, from 1844, concentrated on the production of large-scale works in electroplate, solid silver and gilt-bronze. Shortly thereafter, Christofle was appointed Fournisseur officiel du Roi Louis-Philippe, and in 1855, Fournisseur de l'Empereur. Christofle supplied fine quality pieces, predominantly table-wares, to the various palaces and ministerial offices of Napoleon III. Charles was succeeded by his son Paul and his nephew Henri Bouilhet, and under their direction, the firm exhibited at the major international exhibitions throughout the 19th century. Le Docte, Maximilien (1821-1905) was an agronomist and agricultural chemist, born January 23, 1821 in Jauchelette and died September 13, 1905 in Gembloux. Max Le Docte came from a family of large landowners in Gembloux. The Le Doctes also owned a sugar factory in Gembloux. Like his brother Henri Le Docte , Max was a self-made agronomist. He was closely involved in the establishment of the State Agricultural School of Gembloux in 1860. He and his brother leased the land and abbey next to the factory to the government so that they could house the school there. Le Docte founded the Société royale central d'agriculture de Belgique in 1843 and was appointed secretary for life.
