About the Item

A handsome and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu and black Belgian marble centerpiece, signed F. Barbedienne. This stunning centerpiece/tazza is raised on a circular Ormolu base plate below the black Belgian marble socle support displaying mottled bands. Above is the impressive black Belgian marble bowl with recessed Ormolu reeded bands centered by a stunning and intricately detailed female mask. The Ormolu bands connect the two scrolled handles showcasing large scale male mask with serpents intertwined in their hair. The centerpiece is finished with a mottled edge and smooth interior. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 - 1892) was a renowned French metalworker and bronze founder. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm, Barbedienne, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
