About the Item

Aubagne France, early 20th century. A highly unusual French ceramic piece with beautiful brown glazed exterior and a polychrome glazed interior. The vase or jardiniere features a life-like braided rope entwined to the main body, it is pulled tight and views as a partially opened sack. This piece is marked to the underside T. Bonnet, B. D. R. Aubagne. This piece pays homage to some of the great French ceramic artists such as Georges Jouve (French, 1910-1964) and Jean Mayodon French (1893 - 1967). Majolica is made by shaping and firing a piece of earthenware clay, then applying a tin enamel glaze to create a blank backdrop onto which artisans add finely painted details. Some times the pieces showcase animals, figures or even unusual abstracts.
