Early 19th Century Chinese Scholar's Root Pot

About

Wood brush and scroll pots carved to resemble tree trunks were popular during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), and were among the many esteemed objects found in a scholar’s studio. This early 19th-century pot made of hand-carved root wood has a rustic, organic appearance that would have brought to mind the romantic idea of an artist scholar living amidst nature. Given its size, this pot would have held scrolls, which were regularly rotated for display in the scholar’s studio, giving this vessel a functional as well as aesthetic role.
