Empire period bronze and ormolu Grecian style pair of classical urns, circa 1830

About the Item

This superb quality pair of French Empire classical twin handled urns is very stylish and cast in very heavy solid bronze with alternate sections highlighted with original ormolu which is in excellent condition. The urns stand on square plain bases and above the stepped and tapered stem is cast with fluted and reeded detail. The gently tapering body of the urns is beautifully cast with a central decorative classical panel of intricate foliate scrolls centred with a draped leopard and crown and finished above with a bold raised and moulded Greek key boarder. The impressive twin handles rise up from the rim with flared elegant scrolls and are decorated with graduated beading down their centre and terminate with a stylised classical leopard’s head mount. These impressive urns have a good untouched and well cared for country house look. They are finished with alternate sections in mellow gold ormolu and the bronze has a green/brown slightly mottled patination. The urns are cast in several sections which are assembled and held together with a central threaded bolt and secured with a handmade square nut. The underside of the bases is signed in two places with a foundry mark of initials E P. French, circa 1830 Height 20cm x width 12cm x depth 9cm
