About the Item

French Aesthetic Movement Gilt-Bronze and Champlevé Enamel Urns "Japonisme" Style, Circa 1880 This exquisite pair of footed urns, or jardinières, are quintessential artifacts of the Aesthetic Movement, embodying the period's credo of "Art for Art's Sake." They represent a sophisticated fusion of revived historical craftsmanship and the profound influence of Japanese art on European design. The jewel-like quality of the enamel, combined with the finely cast bronze mounts, showcases the exceptional artistry of Parisian luxury goods manufacturers during the late 19th century. Description and Design Each urn features a body richly decorated with intricate floral patterns in vibrant champlevé enamel. This ancient and painstaking technique involves carving troughs into the bronze surface, which are then filled with colored vitreous enamel and polished to a smooth, luminous finish. The enameled body is set within an elegant gilt and patinated bronze frame. The design is a masterful expression of "Japonisme", the European interpretation of Japanese aesthetics: The side handles are beautifully cast in the form of bamboo stalks. The urns are supported by delicate, naturalistic foliate legs. The striking contrast between the bright, colorful enamel, the lustrous gilt-bronze, and the dark patinated surfaces is a hallmark of the finest decorative arts of this era. Historical Background & Context 🧐 The Aesthetic Movement: Flourishing in the 1870s and 1880s, the Aesthetic Movement was a reaction against the perceived moralizing and industrial crassness of the high Victorian era. Its followers, including Oscar Wilde and William Morris, championed the creation of objects valued for their intrinsic beauty, elegance, and craftsmanship alone, rather than for any narrative or social purpose. The Influence of Japonisme: The single greatest influence on the Aesthetic Movement's visual style was the art of Japan, which became widely available in the West after 1854. Designers were captivated by Japanese asymmetry, use of natural motifs (like bamboo, cranes, and flowers), and superb technical skill. These urns, with their bamboo handles, are a direct tribute to this profound influence. The French Enamel Revival: In the late 19th century, premier French workshops like Barbedienne and Christofle led a revival of medieval craft techniques, particularly champlevé and cloisonné enameling. Once used for religious reliquaries, this technique was now applied to secular luxury objects. This revival of historical craftsmanship, combined with the modern, exotic influence of Japan, created a new and sophisticated decorative language perfectly suited to the "Art for Art's Sake" philosophy.
