About the Item

A beautiful Louis XVI-style urn from France, circa 1860, this grand gilt bronze decorative accessory has been mounted on a square white marble with light cream accents. The main body, which has the form of an ancient volute krater urn, has a black finish with a subtle mottling of brown, offset by glorious gilt foliate and fruit motifs. Imbricated leaves rise up the urn, terminating as large volutes on opposite sides of the neck. In between the whorls is a ring of curled leaves with berry clusters under the recessed round molding of the top of the urn. Sitting on top of the molding is a large gathering of berries enveloped by a leaf cup. There are additional berries inside the volutes, which is also the origination point of a pair of floral swags that hang on the sides of the urn. The circular foot is encircled by a husk motif, just above the marble base. Our Louis XVI-style gilt bronze urn measures just under 30 inches tall. It would be a focal point in a grand foyer or living room if placed on a table or mantel.
