Set of Four 1800s Puglian Green Ceramic Fig Pots
About the Item
Found in Southern Italy, these exquisite and unusual green pots made in the mid 20th century were originally used to preserve dried figs. More commonly seen in a cream ceramic, these particular pieces are an extraordinary green colour due to their copper and iron oxide glaze. This extravagant copper and iron oxide green was usually used for details on ceramics due to its extremely high cost. In this case however, the kiln in Southern Italy was closing down and used its copper and iron oxide glaze on these pots so as not to waste it. Our friends in Southern Italy salvaged the remaining pots and we have been fortunate enough to collect them. Note: the four pots are as pictured in the first photograph.
