Sèvres Rare Porcelain Vase from the 'Camaïeu Carmin' Fontainebleau Service

About the Item

This small but elegant Sèvres porcelain vase boasts an impressive provenance, being part of the 'Camaïeu Carmin' service originally made in 1757 for Louis XV for his Château de Fontainebleau, a residence second only to the Chateau de Versailles. Bearing its full credentials painted in gilt on its base, we can see that this vase was made by the 'Ancienne Manufacture Royale de Limoges' for Louis XV, and according to the manufactory's records, these magnificent pieces were in use as the King’s everyday table settings at this much- favoured second home. The decoration of flower garlands hanging from ribbon bows is simple but exquisite, and is hand-painted in a unique pink colour, known as camaïeu carmin and giving the service its name. This colour, quite rare at the time of manufacture, together with the prominence of its plentiful gold accents, explains why this porcelain was so valuable, despite its seemingly simple appearance. The vase has been embellished with ornate raised gilt floral motifs on either side, and sits on a circular pedestal foot, ringed with matching gilt bands which match those that encircle the body. A real piece of French history.
