STACKED Spalted Maple Vessel, by Richard Haining, Available Now
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Part of Richard Haining's STACKED Collection, this vase was made using reclaimed California redwood salvaged from a decommissioned NYC water tower. The wood's natural coloring shows off tones ranging from pink and deep reds to almost black in color. There is no stain involved. This old-growth wood is only available through reclamation. This vessel was hand-built with tiny blocks of wood; each block being carefully placed to create the desired shape. Once built, the exterior is gently sculpted smooth using a variety of hand tools achieving a polished surface with subtle undulations similar to that of hand-built ceramics. The salvaged wood offers one-of-a-kind patterns brought to life by Richard’s STACKED process, achieving a quality reminiscent of both basketry and mosaic tile work. Upon request, additional “candid/studio” images can be made available. As with all of Richard’s STACKED work, the entirety of this piece was built, sculpted, and finished entirely by his hands. Please note, the last image is a group shot referencing scale. This listing only includes the spalted maple vessel...
