About the Item

A Large 19th Century French Onyx, Silvered, and Gilt-Bronze Vase Attributed to Charpentier & Cie. The vase consists of an onyx body with a flared, slightly everted rim and a tapering form that narrows towards the base. The onyx displays a natural veined pattern with cream, beige, and brown tones. A silvered and gilt-bronze band with a scrolling foliate motif encircles the upper portion, secured to the onyx body. Two gilt-bronze handles extend from the upper section, each terminating in a looped finial with suspended pendant rings. These handles curve outward and attach to the vase’s body through decorative mounts. The lower section features a sculptural support of two opposing silvered-bronze winged sphinxes with muscular lion bodies, outstretched wings, and bearded male faces adorned with headdresses. Their wings extend upward, framing the central portion of the vase. These figures are joined at their backs by a foliate bronze mount that extends upward along the onyx body. The sphinxes rest on an ornate gilt-bronze base with four scrolling feet featuring acanthus leaves, shell motifs, and circular medallions. The base is further adorned with additional foliate elements, and its structural framework integrates with the sphinx figures, supporting the onyx vessel above. France, Circa: 1880
