About the Item

This hand-thrown 2-handle pignate pot, crafted in Grottaglie, Puglia during the mid-1800s, is a perfect example of "ceramica rustica." Known for its spherical shape and robust clay construction, this type of pot was commonly used across southern Italy for cooking legumes over an open flame. The two sturdy handles and thick clay make it both functional and durable, while its rustic charm adds a touch of history to any collection. The pot features a faded half-glaze in a warm ochre hue, beautifully contrasted against the raw, earthy clay. The half glaze was applied primarily for hygienic purposes, allowing the pot to be easily wiped clean after use. It was also an economical choice, as fully glazing the entire pot would have been much more costly. This handmade piece retains the natural imperfections and variations in form, showcasing the artisanal craftsmanship of its time. To care for this pignate pot, gently remove loose dirt using a soft-bristle brush to avoid damaging the delicate surfaces. While washing with tap water is acceptable, distilled or deionized water is recommended for better preservation. Always ensure the water is lukewarm or cooler to maintain the integrity of the clay and glaze.
