About the Item
Elegant 'Datura' flower vase in very good vintage condition. Inspired by the striking datura flower which was a favourite of Constance Sprys. Designed in the 1930s by the famous British florist it is one of the very first vases made for floral decoration. Unglazed on the outside and glazed inside to hold flowers in water. Made by Fulham Pottery late 1930 . Signed with clear markings 'Constance Spry' and 'Made in England'.
Constance Spry was an educator, florist and author who revolutionised the world of flower arrangement. She was an artist rather than a florist and her ground breaking designs were fearless: she took from hedgerows, woods and ferns, even fruit and vegetables if she considered them appropriate for the occasion. Her Mayfair establishment supplied flowers for both the Queens wedding and the Coronation. Spry was also a creative cook and invented ‘Coronation Chicken’ for this event in 1953
