Antique Glass Vase Koloman Moser Loetz Purple 1903 Vienna Jugendstil

About the Item

Vase, Koloman Moser, Johann Loetz Witwe for E. Bakalowits' Söhne, Violetta decoration, 1903 Among the most important glass objects from the Lötz manufactory are undoubtedly those from the series created in cooperation with E. Bakalowits Söhne. As a professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna, Koloman Moser influenced an entire generation of designers and architects. Under his guidance, he and his students created ultra-modern glassware, which today has a firm place in the world's most important museums. This vase, based on a design from 1903, is one of the most technically complex shapes from this period. The handles were pulled out of the hot glass mass and reinserted in order to completely transform the rather massive basic form. The delicate pink "Violetta" decoration further emphasizes the lightness of the design. The combination of these elements ultimately creates a modern glass object that is unique in its effect. Material and technique: glass, mould-blown and freeform, reduced and iridescent Bib.: A. Adlerova, E. Ploil, H. Ricke, T. Vlcek (ed.), Loetz – Böhmisches Glas 1880-1940, vol. II, paper pattern catalogue, Prestel, Munich 1989, paper pattern 85/5108, p. 309.

Glass vase manufactured by Johann Loetz Witwe PG 1/158 decoration ca. 1901 Austrian Jugendstil This vase is an excellently preserved and exquisite specimen, which illustrates the high art of glassblowing from the manufacturer Loetz. The decoration from the Phenomen Genre family is characterized mainly by the contrasting and matte iridescence, which show new qualities in their color gradient with each incidence of light. The veined and irregularly warped bands with their slightly silvery shimmer are particularly striking. What is exciting is that especially the decoration “PG 1/158” – originally composed of two different decorations – unfolds completely new on each form and thus gives each shape of vase something unique. Through the use of the base in the color green in combination with the different curvatures and indents of this filigree vase...

  • After Loetz, Bohemian Jugendstil Iridescent Art-Glass Flower Vase, ca. 1900
    By Loetz Glass
    Located in New York, NY
This large elegant, museum quality flower vase was probably made by Johann LOETZ Witwe Glassworks (Klostermühle, Bohemia, circa 1900) is a superior example of Jugendstil ~ Art Nouveau luxury object. The semi-translucent art glass strikes a spectator not only with the uniqueness of its surface, reminiscent of crocodile skin, but also with unexpected color scheme - a combination of dark brown, old gold and green, covered with craquelure; against the background of iridescent violet. The vase is framed by outstandingly designed bronzed & patinated pewter mounting, consisting of simple large handles, almost geometric-form; with one wreath of leaves, crowning the neck; and the second, forming a base. The simplicity of the forms both, the glass vessel and the mounting are generating extremely interesting decorative effects, inherent exclusively to Jugendstil ~ Art Nouveau era. LOETZ Witwe Glassworks In 1836, Johann Eisner established a glassworks in the Southern Bohemian town of Klostermühle, today part of the Czech Republic. The Art Nouveau Period was the glory years of the company. The glassworks created large numbers of its own new designs of iridescent, trailing art nouveau glass, sometimes in collaboration with well-known artists and designers like Marie Kirschner and Franz Hofstötter (aka Franz Hofstätter). The company’s success during this period had two prime drivers – the technical expertise of Prochaska and the business acumen of von Spaun. Loetz Witwe created many of its own designs, and also supplied glass commissioned by major customers like E. Bakolowits (Vienna) and Max Emanuel...
