About the Item

This stunningly colored Art Deco Ceramic Vase with Cubic Flowers in Craquelure & Multicolor Glazed Detailing is designed by Charles Catteau for Boch Freres Keramis, originating from Belgium, Circa 1930. Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. The company’s name, “Keramis,” was derived from keramos, the ancient Greek word for pottery. They're highly regarded today as well as during their time of production, and are known for distinguished black outlines, bold cubist motifs, and references from nature. French Ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company in 1906 as their creative director, and pioneered their transition from production of utilitarian objects to true works of art. The mouth and bottom edge of this stunning piece is glazed in a high chroma cobalt blue, outlined with a thin black glaze before expanding into gorgeous abstract geometric and cubist forms of flowers and their leaves in bloom. The design utilizes the off white bone hue of the natural ceramic as a ground color, framing the shapes in black to give a bold presence and clear figure ground relationship throughout the surface of the piece. Craqueleur texturing also helps unify the piece with a unified patterning, most visible in the bone white sections, then increasingly difficult to perceive through the varying opacity of yellow, cobalt, turquoise, and black glazed shapes. Stamps and signature on the bottom denoting the maker. In Excellent Vintage Condition. Belgium, circa 1930 Dimensions: Height: 10.5" x Diameter: 6"
