About the Item

Arts & Crafts Movement 'Royal Barum Ware' Pottery Vase, circa 1888, the base inscribed CH Brannam/Barum, dated 1888, and with artist monogram for William Brannam. The bottle form vase is centered by a decorative border with whimsical griffins around a fountain and scrolling foliage. Provenance: From the Rubin Collection. The Brannam Pottery was established in 1848 and would become known for the art pottery created by Charles Brannam, who introduced his distinctive slip glazed, sgraffito pottery known as "Royal Barum Ware" in 1879. The Arts & Crafts style art pottery earned a fashionable following, including patronage by Queen Victoria which afforded it the 'Royal' accolade in the title, and representation in top London boutiques including Liberty's.

    Repaired: The vase has a small professionally restored chip to the mouth. Wear consistent with age and use. The hand made vase has various firing errors including a large area of discoloration to the glaze.
