Blue and White Cobalt Baluster Form Prunus Vintage Vase

About the Item

A vintage Chinese blue and white prunus decorated baluster vase is from the Zhongguo period (circa 1960-70) marks. Zhongguo translates to "Middle Kingdom." The vase is of baluster form with cobalt blue ground and profuse white prunus decoration, marked underneath with "Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi" underglaze blue marks. The glazed porcelain Prunus is impressive, and so is the condition of this mid century vase. The background is the most wonderful part of this vase in a deep rich cobalt blue color with white cherry blossom flowers, and cherry branches throughout It has a fluted top and bottom. Blue and white cobalt production did not begin in China. The mineral was scarce around 700 AD in Asia, but was already being mined in the area which is now Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and Iran. They gained their first recognition in the Islamic world and later were introduced into China via the Silk Road, a lucrative trading route of Chinese textiles that began in China and ended roughly in Constantinople and other cities according to historians. The vase is in excellent condition and is marked. It measures 12.5 inches tall.
