Blue and White Delft Charger Made Netherlands circa 1770

$1,330

About

This blue and white Dutch Delft charger was hand-painted in cobalt blue by De Drie Vergulde Astonnekens (The 3 Gilded Ashcans) factory in the 18th century, circa 1760. The exquisite decoration features a central scene in the "Thousand Flowers" style of 18th century Delft. We see a single songbird amid flowers, leaves, and scrolling vines. The design is lively, and the painting is beautifully done. The quality of the glaze is exceptional. The bold leaf design around the border frames the center scene. Dimensions: 14" in diameter x 2.25" deep Condition: Excellent Price: $1380 We also have a pair of Delft vases with the mark of De Drie Vergulde Astonnekens (The 3 Gilded Ashcans) and a similar "Thousand Flowers" decoration in our collection. See Item Reference LU866523274022 Background of Dutch Delft: Delft's technique was first described in writing by Gerrit Paape in "The Delft Pottery Maker," written in 1794 and dedicated to Lambertus Sanderus, the owner of De Porceleyne Claeuw (The Porcelain Claw). Delft faience began in the 17th century. Much of the finest Delft was produced in the Dutch city of Delft. The Delft potters began to coat their pots completely in a white tin glaze. They then began to cover the white tin-glaze with a clear glaze, giving depth to the fired surface and smoothness to cobalt blues. Over time they created a good resemblance to porcelain. By circa 1650, the potter's and painters' technical skills were much improved, and Delft began its golden age.
