Brown and Silver "Argenta" Vase by Wilhelm Kåge made in 1938 from Gustavsberg

About the Item

A rare and early example from Wilhelm Kåge’s iconic Argenta series, produced at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory in 1938. Crafted in stoneware with an unusual mottled brown glaze — a notable departure from the more commonly seen emerald green typical of the series — this piece stands out as especially desirable. Decorated with hand-applied silver motifs depicting two elegant swans in motion, a recurring symbol in Kåge’s artistic language, executed with refined detail and balance. The silver overlay, characteristic of the Argenta line, here takes on a particularly poetic expression in contrast to the deep, warm glaze. The vase is marked with the Gustavsberg anchor mark, signed "Kåge", and stamped "Handcrafted" and "Argenta 1079 H", where the year code H corresponds to 1938. A unique collector’s piece for those seeking the extraordinary in Swedish modernism. Wilhelm Kåge served as artistic director at Gustavsberg from 1917 to 1949 and introduced the Argenta series in the 1920s. It quickly became an international success, embodying modernity through its clean forms and metallic decoration. This example is a superb testament to Kåge’s artistic range and his ability to unite classical form with functionality and innovation. Flower combination: Cool and Dramatic Lavender & Lamb’s Ear – An elegant bouquet where the purple tones of lavender meet the silvery, velvety leaves of lamb’s ear. A dramatic combination that evokes mystery and stillness—perfect for a sophisticated, modern feel. or passionately dramatic with Dark Red Dahlias & Pink Phlox – romantic bouquet featuring dark red dahlias for depth and intensity, balanced by the soft clusters of light pink phlox.
