Ceramic Faceted Vessel with Striped Glaze by John Ward
About the Item
A stoneware vessel with banded stripe glaze made by British studio potter John Ward (1938-2023) circa last quarter of 20th century. The vessel takes an interesting multi-faceted form with a large opening and stands on a small, tapered base. In contrast with the elegant and well-balanced form, the glaze decoration features oblique bands of white and celadon that appears rotating along the body, a visual nod to the op art movement. The surface is marked with a fine and intentionally irregular texture, a signature style of the artist. The work is modern and minimal in nature, yet it calls to mind a strong sense of inspiration from antiquity. The base is branded with the artist's seal and initial "JW".
John Ward’s ceramic artwork is found in the permanent collections of many leading art museums including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Biography (courtesy of Oxford Ceramic Gallery):
"The leading hand-builder John Ward was born in 1938 and trained at Camberwell College of Arts in the 1960s. He is one of a number of significant modern potters to have concentrated on the pared down individual vessel form, most particularly the bowl, as a touchstone for exploration. His generally simple work has been augmented by more complex structures, the shapes cut and altered, perhaps with abstract, geometric decoration and cut-away rims that give some of his pieces an architectural quality. In addition to urban surfaces, his work evokes honed natural forms, the kind of bonier, elemental landscape he has lived in since he moved close to the Welsh coast in 1979. His best pots speak eloquently of the limitless language of the bowl and globular jar, their sculptural and metaphorical resonances."

John Ward
John Ward was born in 1938 in Islington, London, studied at East Ham Technical College and University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts. He had two workshops in South East London during the 1970s, at Anerley and Charlton, before moving to Dyfed in Wales in 1979. Ward uses coiling techniques to produce hollow vessels with simple but subtle shapes and surface textures. He mixes his own body clay and finishes his pots by scraping and burnishing them. He sometimes uses underglaze painted decoration. Ward's work has been exhibited widely, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and is of much interest to serious collectors.

Large Ceramic Vase with Banded Glaze by John Ward
By John Ward
Located in Atlanta, GA
A large stoneware vessel with distinct form by British studio potter John Ward (1938-2023) circa last quarter of 20th century. The form of the vase as in the artist's repertoire may be known as a "Disc Pot" due to its unique shape. It features a round flattened body that organically morphs into a tapering neck with a slightly dipped neckline. It calls to mind the Chinese "moon flask", whose origin was likely attributed to the nomads of the Islamic Central Asia. The pot is covered with a mottled cream glaze specked with brown marks, mimicking the earth deposits on an archeological object...

Striped Fold with Inclusions I, Red & Blue Ceramic Vessel by Steven Edwards
By Steven Edwards
Located in London, GB
Striped fold with inclusions I is a unique sculpture by the British artist Steven Edwards, created from colored parian porcelain.
Steven Edwards is a ceramic artist whose work investigates the language of making through the materiality and physicality of clay. Fascinated by process-led making, he uses traditional techniques that provoke unanticipated outcomes, using clay as a medium that sustains the narrative of the making process. The resulting forms embody his interaction and manipulation of the clay using bespoke tools to explore the intrinsic properties of the material.
His creative practice starts by purposely placing clay under stress to reveal the natural tension and movement in its surface and form. Throughout the whole making process, he pushes, pulls, compresses and slices the material to provoke a reaction. The final forms are a combination of these making scenarios, translating a theme of duality in their appearance – the contrast of visual distortion and precision, the stillness and movement in form and the surface deception between synthetic and natural.
Whilst challenging and pushing his material to the limits, often using clay bodies in ways they are not designed for, Edwards purposely exploits unexpected outcomes. Creating a sense of unease, during the making his clay cracks and buckles, resulting in permanent scars that illustrate the extremes that have been asked of it. Purely aesthetic, these fissures within the surface are an important counter point to the idealised sugary-hued confectionery layered rings.
Edwards has exhibited his work at premiere contemporary design and craft shows including British Ceramics...
