Ceramics Vase Ernst Wahliss Wien Karl Klaus Attributes to Serapis-Fayence

About

At the turn of the 20th century “Ernst Wahliss Wien” was one of Austria's leading manufactories for porcelain and earthenware. This great success can be attributed to the innovative spirit of the founder Ernst Wahliss. Together with his chemists he extended the scarce number of colors for painting earthenware to a bright palette, including even silver and gold. In the years before World War I the company had reached its peak. Famous designers such as Bolek, Prutscher, Klaus and Gallé, among others, were engaged and their designs were sold in showrooms in Vienna, London, Berlin, Paris and Brussels. The stylistic features and the unusual decoration of this vase bear the distinctive style of Karl Klaus. The young architect and designer had just graduated from the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, where he had also studied under professor Josef Hoffmann. Back then, Klaus’ creations for “Ernst Wahliss Wien” were among the company's most popular designs and are still highly appreciated by collectors and experts today. Karl Klaus had a unique talent for harmonizing form and decoration. The black, concentric rings of the decor emphasize and reinforce the organic curves of this vase and lend it a sculpture-like appearance. Both the excellent design and the outstanding craftsmanship of these ceramics have helped the company “Ernst Wahliss Wien” towards its great success and are still an impressive testimony to the artistic value of Viennese Jugendstil ceramics.
