About the Item

This glass vase is related to a group of artistic production based on the reemergence of classicism after the end of the war years and starting in the early to mid-1950s and moved and expanded on thru the 1960s. Cinema, theater and painters like Picasso modernized and brutalized the graceful forms to set a tone for the world as seen thru the war years and the explosion of life and new social norms. The vase is blown and created as a classical vase then applied maidens and decorative elements are set down on the surface lastly the rim and handle are applied and an acid wash with traces of pigment creating a muddy found look. To further decorate the glass blowers art gold in sporadic places has been laid over the vase while still hot adhering it in a distressed and worn away fashion. The usual sense of delicate blown glass is here dispensed with and the vase is heavy and solid like the past. A full ground pontel is seen on the bottom and the vase is etched with a date of 1966 but not signed. The vase is shown with a base in turned ebonized wood further creating the illusion of an antiquity displayed as Modern Art. This base is surely after market and designed as a personal touch. vase 16 inches tall with a 6 inch diameter, base is 3 tall by 5 inches diameter.
