About the Item
The Coliseu Pedestals designed by Gabriel Tan, with the roman travertine tray made by Ricardo Eira and the smoked ash base made by Carlos Barbosa, are inspired by the amphitheaters of ancient Rome. The gently concave part of the wooden base matches seamlessly with the slope of the travertine tray, resulting in an object that is a functional sculpture combining two noble materials we love. The natural qualities of travertine stone could present certain cavities and color variations.

Designer
Gabriel Tan Studio is a design practice working across the borders of craft, culture, and technology. Exploring new ways to interpret luxury and break archetypes, the studio works on product and furniture design for international clients including Ariake, Blå Station, Menu, Design Within Reach, The Conran Shop, Asplund, and Abstracta. Besides being the founder of Portuguese craft brand Origin Made, Gabriel Tan creative directs Japanese furniture brand Ariake, and Turn, a door handle brand from Singapore. He is also the principal of the interior design firm Antimatter.
Craftsman
Filipe Eira and his family are stonemasons who own a workshop where different types of stone are transformed into unique pieces. After selecting a material, the stone is machined to cut the block into smaller pieces and to derive a general shape. The final detailing and polishing are still made by hand using rudimentary tools, where the eventual quality of a piece is deeply reflective of the experience of the craftsman responsible for the task.
