Cup Charred Vase in "Barro Preto" Handcrafted in Portugal by Origin Made

$157.95per item

About

The Cup vase is part of the collection "Charred Vases", five unique forms made in the dying Portuguese art of Barro Preto. Buried and fired in an underground pit called a Soenga, this process of smothering the ceramic removes oxygen and results in a non-homogenous texture of black, grey and earth tones. A vanishing tradition – there are few artisans left who have the knowledge to produce objects in Barro Preto. Together with João Lourenço, Gabriel Tan wishes to rekindle this heritage. The barro preto is a non-homogenous texture of black, grey and earth tones. Designed by Gabriel Tan, made by João Lourenço. The Craftsman Working from his atelier in Barcelos, João Lourenço is a ceramic artist and master potter, one of the few craftsmen remaining who is experienced in producing objects in the traditional technique of Barro Preto. He also makes objects in terracotta, pasta greis chamotada and exhibits his hand made ceramics at local craft fairs. A man dedicated to his craft, full of positivity and openness, João was the first craftsman we collaborated with and fully embodies the spirit of Origin. The Designer Gabriel Tan Studio is a design practice working across the borders of craft, culture and technology. Exploring new ways to interpret luxury and break archetypes, the studio works on product and furniture design for international clients including Blå Station, Design Within Reach, The Conran Shop, Ishinomaki Lab, TAKATA Lemnos and Authentics. Gabriel Tan also creative directs the brands Ariake and Turn. Aside from his design work, he has guest lectured at Lasalle College of the Arts, Pratt Institute, National University of Singapore, the University of Oregon and also served as a jury member at the Cannes Lions Festival. About the Maker

Origin Made

Origin Made was born as a desire to create objects with a soul. We work with family run workshops or solo artisans, pairing them with internationally recognized or up-and-coming designers to develop collectible products. We view our craftsmen as partners rather than suppliers, and we give a face to the hands that shape our products, promoting them alongside our designers. It is a brand that puts the heart in front of everything else, with a passion for the craft process that represent our intangible cultural value and heritage. We believe that the story of each object should be told from where it is born - the workshop of the craftsman - how it is made and the environment in which it is conceived. The recipient of our products deserves to know, in order to truly understand the piece they have received.
