About the Item

This tall, Delft-style polychrome vase is a refined example of mid-century Velsen’s hand-painted earthenware, rendered in a graceful elongated baluster form. Its silhouette flares at the neck and foot, tapering through the body in a rhythm of gentle curves—a timeless vessel shape that traces its lineage to 17th- and 18th-century Dutch pottery, yet here feels distinctly of its time. The decoration is exuberantly floral, densely painted with fruiting vines, stylized petals, and a central bird in flight—all executed in Velsen’s signature multicolor palette. Shades of cobalt blue, brick red, olive, orange, mustard, plum, and black dance across the surface in crisp, graphic harmony. The color language echoes antique Delft polychrome traditions—originally inspired by Chinese famille verte and Japanese porcelain—but interpreted through a freer, more decorative mid-century sensibility. Founded in 1920 and active through the postwar period, Velsen was one of the few remaining Dutch ceramic workshops to emphasize fully hand-painted Delft-style wares. This vase reflects that artisanal focus: the painter’s hand is evident in every flourish and detail, imbuing the work with vibrancy and intent. The vase’s dramatic silhouette and generous scale lend it to a variety of uses—a vibrant standalone statement in an entryway, a bold accent on a console or side table, or even a stylish umbrella stand anchoring a vestibule. It can also accommodate a large floral display, offering height and color to traditional, maximalist, or eclectic interiors. Fully signed on the underside with the Velsen mark, painter’s initials, and model number.
