About the Item
An Arts & Crafts double-handled urn created by Gwendoline Buckler for Della Robbia Pottery around 1900.
Della Robbia Pottery, named after the Italian pottery Della Robbia, was located in Birkenhead, Cheshire from 1893 to 1906. As a result of the spread of Arts and Crafts ideals, painting on pottery was considered a suitable dignified form of employment for middle class women. This urn, designed and painted by Gwendoline Buckler, exemplifies the Arts and Crafts ethos with its hand-crafted form and richly glazed decoration.
The urn features twin handles with a molded mask, its surface adorned with intricate stylized foliage in a harmonious palette of ochre, pale greens, and mottled blues.
