About the Item

French Mid-Century Stoneware Vase by Ferdinand Elchinger, Soufflenheim, France, 1950s A striking example of mid-century French stoneware, this vase was crafted by Ferdinand Elchinger in Soufflenheim, Alsace, during the 1950s. The piece is marked “Elchinger France” under the base (see photo), confirming its authenticity. Its refined form and flamed stoneware finish reflect the sophisticated yet understated style for which Céramiques Elchinger became internationally renowned. Height: 10" (25.5 cm) Width: 9.6" (24.5 cm) Depth: 7.7" (19.5 cm) Céramiques Elchinger, founded in 1834 by Wendelin Elchinger, evolved from a small family tile factory (originally established by Michel Elchinger circa 1792) into one of France’s most celebrated ceramic manufacturers. Initially focused on culinary pottery, the company expanded into decorative and ornamental ceramics in the late 19th century under Philippe and Léon Elchinger. Léon, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and Strasbourg, brought a sophisticated artistic vision to the workshop, creating flamed stoneware and ceramic panels that earned international recognition. Ferdinand Elchinger continued this tradition in the mid-20th century, modernizing the factory while preserving the artistic quality of its ceramics. In the 1950s and 1960s, the workshop gained a strong reputation for vases, pitchers, and home décor pieces that offered refined alternatives to the exuberant productions of southern French studios like Vallauris. This vase exemplifies the elegance, technical mastery, and artistic heritage of Céramiques Elchinger, making it a desirable collectible for enthusiasts of mid-century French ceramics and Alsatian decorative arts.
