Émile Decoeur, Black Glazed Stoneware Vase, c. 1930

About the Item

E´mile Decoeur (1876-1953) began his career as a ceramicist under the apprenticeship of famed French ceramicist, Raoul Lachenal. Decoeur's work was once aptly described by a critic as “sober in form and opulent in material.” His creations can be categorized by restraint, graceful proportions, and glazes with rich depth of color. The idea of Japonisme is also present in his work - the rhythmic, concentric circles accenting the surface of this particular vase suggest waves or raked sand in a Japanese garden. Through the black glaze, there are subtle hints of emerald green. The calm, organic qualities of Decoeur’s work brought a definitive style to modern French ceramics through technique and simplicity of form. Impressed on underside: “Decoeur."
